WILKES-BARRE — PPL Electric Utilities Residential Program Manager Mary Ann Merenda Wednesday said recycling older appliances can help you save energy, and it also helps the environment.
“We want to make it easier for our customers to properly dispose of their old appliances and these events, which are held in various communities throughout the year, allow them to remove unwanted clutter, save more energy and receive a rebate in the process,” Merenda said.
PPL Electric Utilities will hold an appliance recycling event on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, 255 Highland Park Blvd., Wilkes-Barre Township, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
During the event, participants can also donate school supplies to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania and local students.
Customers will be able to recycle room air conditioners and dehumidifiers that are in working condition. Participants will be mailed a $10 rebate check for each appliance they recycle and there is no limit on how many units a customer can recycle.
Customers must register in advance online at — pplelectric.com/recycle.
Through a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern Pennsylvania, PPL Electric will also be collecting school supplies — such as pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons, construction paper, glue sticks, backpacks, lunch boxes, folders, etc. — to benefit local students as they return to the classroom this fall.
Participants can make their school supply donation to any of the PPL Electric representatives onsite during the event.
In addition to these small appliance events, PPL Electric also provides free at-home pickups of working, older refrigerators and freezers. Customers can receive a $50 rebate for each refrigerator or freezer and PPL Electric will haul it away.
